German police detain man, search home for toxic substances

BERLIN (AP) – German police are searching the apartment of a 29-year-old Tunisian man who is accused of keeping toxic substances in his home in the western city of Cologne.

Police in protective gear raided the apartment Tuesday night and detained the suspect and his wife. Their children were given into the custody of the city’s social welfare services. The suspect’s identity was not given for privacy reasons.

The German news agency dpa reported Wednesday that police were still examining the apartment in the Chorweiler neighborhood of the city, but did not release any further details on the man’s motive or what kind of toxic material he is accused of having kept in his apartment.

The federal prosecutor has taken over the investigation and dpa reported that a terrorist motive may be possible.
