Germany midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has given his verdict on England’s chances of success at Euro 2024.

Prior to the start of the tournament, England were widely seen as the favourites for glory.

However, Gareth Southgate’s side received much criticism for their performances during the group stages, especially during the draws with Denmark and Slovenia.

Despite finishing top of Group C and therefore seemingly securing a favourable route to the final, England’s displays were unconvincing.

Gundogan has now revealed what he expects from England, who take on Slovakia in the last 16 on Sunday.

As reported by The Athletic, Gundogan said: ‘Never underestimate England.

‘They finished top of the group and got the results. In these tournaments, that’s a massive thing. Getting the results gives you confidence and motivation to play better. It’s just about getting into the next round all the time.’

Gundogan added that France are the only nation that have a squad that matches England’s quality.

He said: ‘Maybe only France have a similar squad in terms of talent and potential. England are still among the favourites. In the knockouts, they are full of experience — but I can understand the criticism saying they could play better.

‘In our case, you can see how getting results over the line can make the difference.

‘The mood around Germany is very good, but that’s because we get results.’

Germany finished top of Group A having taken seven points from their three games.

If England manage to overcome Slovakia then they will take on either Switzerland or Italy in the quarter-finals.

Germany, meanwhile, are on the other side of the draw and could therefore potentially face England in the final.
