Getaway host Sam McClymont reveals how her young children are coping as she battles aggressive breast cancer at age 38 – after she was initially given the all-clear

Sam McClymont has revealed how her young songs are coping as she undergoes chemotherapy while battling breast cancer.

The Getaway host and country music star was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease at the age of 38 last year.

She admitted it was also difficult explaining her diagnosis to her two young boys, Wilder, six, and Ari, five – but they have been supportive.

‘He likes to tell people, “This is my mum, she’s bald”‘ she tells Stellar Magazine this week of her youngest boy, Ari.

‘It’s not like he sees anyone else like me at the moment, so I think it might be a protective thing where he wants to call out the elephant in the room before it’s pointed out: “Yes, we know Mum is bald. Thank you'”.

She said her son and husband, pilot Ben Poxon, also helped her shave her hair off but she ‘couldn’t be emotional when she looked in the mirror as they were with her’.

Sam earlier revealed she was initially given the all-clear last year after finding a lump in her right breast and went in to get her results assuming it would be good news.

‘I was by myself when they told me I had triple negative cancer, the most aggressive breast cancer’ she said.

‘Then what goes through my brain is, well, I’ve known about this since October and it’s now the end of February; how fast has this been growing?’

Sam said she underwent further tests and didn’t hear back from her doctor so she returned to her next appointment three weeks later.

‘I decided to go to see the specialist anyway and see what my options were,’ she told Woman’s Day.

But she was left shocked when the specialist informed her she had triple negative breast cancer, the most aggressive form.

‘I was instantly crying. It was a shock. He was telling me about all the treatments, but I couldn’t believe it,’ Sam recalled.

‘I was bawling when I called [her husband] Ben and my younger sister Mollie. Then she was crying. Nobody was expecting this.’

Sam has also taken a step back from work as she is currently not able to travel with her TV show Getaway.

She has completed 12 of her 16 rounds of chemo and will then be having surgery and radiation.

Triple negative breast cancer is considered life threatening because its aggressive and accelerates the rate at which the cancer can grow and spread.

Common symptoms include breast lumps, swelling, breast or nipple pain, dimpled skin and nipple discharge.
