Ghislaine Maxwell has been seen in public for the first time since close friend Jeffrey Epstein apparently committed suicide while awaiting trial for sex crimes.

The British socialite, 57, was photographed eating at an In-N-Out burger restaurant in Los Angeles on Monday while reading a book entitled ‘The Book of Honor: The Secret Lives and Deaths of CIA Operatives.’

When confronted, she replied: ‘Well, I guess this is the last time I’ll be eating here!’

Maxwell has previously been accused in court papers of helping to procure underage girls for Epstein to abuse – claims which she has denied.

The photos were first published by the New York Post, which said one diner went up and spoke to Maxwell as she ate alongside her pet dog.

“Are you who I think you are?” the diner allegedly said. She replied, “Yes, I am.”

Before these images emerged, Maxwell had not been seen in public since 2016.

Ghislaine, daughter of notorious media mogul Robert Maxwell, is thought to have met Epstein some time in the early 1990s and was linked to him romantically in 1992.

The pair dated for some time before settling into a close friendship and she was known to be part of his inner circle for decades.

She is the link between Epstein and members of British high society, including Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

However, she distanced herself from Epstein as claims he abused underage women first began to emerge in the mid-2000s.

When some of Epstein’s alleged victims sued the paedophile following his 2008 plea deal which saw him escape serious jail time, Maxwell was accused of helping him procure underage girls to abuse.

Virginia Giuffre – who was then known as Virginia Roberts – said in court papers that she met Maxwell at Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lago club in 2000 and she recruited her to be Epstein’s sex slave.

Maxwell denied the allegations and the lawsuit was ultimately settled out of court, with Giuffre’s remarks struck from the record by a judge.

However, it is thought that the FBI are again interested in questioning Maxwell after Epstein died in his jail cell on August 10 while awaiting trial for sex crimes.

It is thought that Maxwell has been laying low in a $3million New England mansion owned by tech CEO Scott Borgerson, 43, after a source told DailyMail.com that the pair are in a relationship.

‘She’s become a real homebody, rarely ventures out. She’s the antithesis of the woman who traveled extensively and partied constantly with Epstein,’ a source familiar with Maxwell’s new life exclusively told DailyMail.com.

Borgerson has denied that the pair are dating, telling the Post that he is ‘home alone with my cat.’

Asked about the status of his relationship with Maxwell, he refused to comment.
