Giants QB Tommy DeVito claims he ‘belongs in the NFL’, despite the New York rookie being benched for Tyrod Taylor at halftime of Eagles loss

For the man affectionately called ‘Tommy Cutlets’, the 2023 season may already be burnt to a crisp.

But Tommy DeVito, the New York Giants quarterback who stepped in for an injured Daniel Jones, believes that he now has the confidence of a man who started in the NFL.

DeVito was benched at halftime of last week’s blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and is set to be sat down for this Sunday’s game against the LA Rams in favor of Tyrod Taylor.

But while DeVito may not ‘know what the future holds’ he does believe that there’s a place for him in the league.

His main takeaway from his time with the Giants so far is, ‘That I belong,’ DeVito said at a press conference.

‘In the NFL, specifically. I mean, just to go out and to prove that to myself. To the younger me, to the me that was training to be here to this point. That’s all it is.’

In a year dominated by contributions from backup quarterbacks, DeVito may have been the most memorable of all of them. 

Undrafted out of college (three years at Syracuse, one at Illinois), DeVito got his first NFL start in a 49-17 loss to the Dallas Cowboys after starting QB Daniel Jones went down injured.

DeVito then rattled off three straight wins – including a 24-22 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football.

But a poor showing against the New Orleans Saints was followed up by a Christmas Day disaster in Philadelphia that saw DeVito pulled from his start in favor of Taylor.

The Giants are now firmly out of the playoffs – with only this game against the Rams and the season finale at home against the Eagles on the cards for them.
