A girl who died nine days after being hit by ambulance while she was walking as it responded to a 999 emergency call has been named as ten-year-old Shaniqua Loftman-Smith.

The front windscreen of the ambulance was smashed in by the force of the impact in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire, on December 22 at about 6.30pm. 

Shaniquawas taken to hospital in a critical condition, but police revealed today that she has now died – and paramedics have offered their ‘deepest condolences’.

Richard Henderson, chief executive of East Midlands Ambulance Service, told of his sadness at the incident and insisted his team were co-operating with police.

He said: ‘I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the patient’s family at this very difficult time, and my thoughts are with everyone affected by this incident.

‘We continue to fully co-operate with the police in their investigation into what happened, and therefore it would be inappropriate for us to make any further comment at this time.’ 

Nottinghamshire Police said the force ‘would like to offer their condolences to the girl’s family, who have asked for privacy at this difficult time’.

Officers from the police’s serious collision investigation unit are continuing their probe into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police closed Low Wood Road between the junctions with Sellers Wood Drive and Hempshill Lane overnight on December 22 to investigate what happened.  

Anyone who saw the collision, has any information or dashcam footage is asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 650 of December 22.
