Girl, 13, is hospitalized with horrific injuries when a plastic bottle tossed onto the street by strangers EXPLODES in her hands

  • A 13-year-old girl in Vancouver was hospitalized with serious injuries to her hands when a plastic bottle she picked up exploded in her hands on Saturday 
  • The girl’s mom said several men in an SUV were driving by and tossed a bottle out of the window and when her daughter picked it up the bottle exploded
  • Relatives said several men were in the SUV and now police are trying to locate it 

 A teenage girl in Washington state was picking up litter on her street when the plastic bottle she was holding exploded leaving her with serious injuries to her hands. 

Ashli Fortner, the 13-year-old girl’s mother, said her daughter was walking the dog around 7.40pm on Saturday in their Vancouver neighborhood when a person driving past in an SUV tossed a plastic bottle out the window onto the street. 

Fortner said her daughter walked over to the bottle and picked it up to throw it in the trash. Seconds after the girl grabbed the plastic bottle it exploded.

Photos released by Fortner show the young girl’s hands covered in a blood and what appears to be a piece of the plastic bottle sticking out of her wrist. The girl’s clothes are also stained with her blood. 

‘It’s terrifying. Anything can happen and a bottle exploding with your child is terrifying,’ Fortner told KGW8. 

Police said they received reports of a small explosion in the area, and when they arrived the girl had significant injuries to her hands and wrists,

Police are searching for the car and are asking for the public's help in locating it

She was taken to the hospital and received stitches to her hands and wrists.

Her mom said she is expected to be OK, but is shaken up over the incident. 

Authorities are now searching for a dark green SUV and are asking for the public’s help in identifying the car. Family members said several men were in the car.
