A girl was rushed to hospital after she and her dog were attacked by two other dogs in front of horrified children near a school in Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to a street near Berwick Fields Primary School in Melbourne’s south-east on Wednesday morning following reports a 12-year-old girl and her nine-year-old dog were bitten by two dogs that escaped from a nearby property.

It’s understood the girl was bitten on the hand during the morning school drop-off.

She was assisted at the scene by an off-duty paramedic before being taken to Casey Hospital in a stable condition suffering minor upper and lower injuries.

She had since undergone surgery and is understood to have been mentally traumatised by the harrowing ordeal, the Herald Sun reported.

 The injured dog is also recovering after undergoing a six-hour operation.

The girl’s father later took to social media to thank those involved in helping his daughter and her dog after the incident.

‘Thank you to everyone who stopped to help today,’ he said.

‘The dogs have been caught and the owner has been identified.

‘We will leave it in the hands of the law.’

The girl’s mother added she was grateful her daughter and their dog were both alive.

Casey Council has confirmed it has seized two dogs and is investigating the incident.

‘The City of Casey is currently investigating a dog attack that occurred in Bellevue Drive, Berwick on Wednesday 27 July, resulting in injuries to a 12-year-old girl and her dog,’ safer  communities manager

‘Two dogs believed to be responsible for the attack have been seized by Council officers.
