Girl left with large gash after NYC construction accident

An eight-year-old girl was left with a large gash and concussion after a piece a wood fell from a New York City construction site.

Tatiana Piedrahita was leaving her Queen’s apartment in NYC with her family when a large piece of plywood fell on her head from a construction site.

Her father, Diego Devia, reportedly asked the construction workers to stop what they were doing while his family passed prior to the incident and they refused.

Tatiana was treated at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan for a concussion and large gash, but she is expected to make a full recovery.

Neighbors said they heard the eight-year-old screaming after the incident and her three-year-old brother crying

Construction workers were lowering the piece of wood from a fourth-floor fire escape at 9.30am when it fell.

The family was leaving their apartment to go to the park when the plywood fell from the third floor.

Devia reportedly was furious and had to be restrained after the wood came crashing down on his daughter.

‘I just ran to my daughter,’ Tatiana’s mother Olga Piedrahita said to Pix 11 News. ‘She was bleeding, just gushing blood.’

Tatiana received three staples on her head because of the laceration.

The family is grateful that Tatiana didn’t suffer from more life-threatening injuries, but she will not be able to return to school until the middle of the week at the earliest.

The Department of Buildings told NBC 4 they are investigating the incident.

It has already issued three violations to the property for failing to safeguard a construction site and performing unpermitted work.

A full stop-work order was issued to the property after the incident.
