Girl, two, fights for her life after Birmingham fire

A two-year-old child is fighting for his life after being rescued from a burning flat along with two of her siblings and their mother.

The child, name locally as Mason Rowe, is in an induced coma, while his mother, Sophie, and two brothers – 15-year-old Tyler and eight-year-old Dexter – are also in hospital after the fire ripped through a flat in Bartley Green, Birmingham. 

Brave locals pulled two of the children from the back of the property in Bartley Green, Birmingham. 

Neighbours told how the family screamed for help from the second floor windows as the fire raged around them.

Seven fire engines then arrived and firefighters rescued the mother and child using ladders.

They were all rushed to hospital and the toddler was put in an induced coma.

A neighbour said: ‘Everyone was in shock but we all acted quickly to help the family.

‘We managed to pull out two children alive before the fire service got here.

‘They were very quick and then they rescued the other child and the woman.’

Fire investigators were carrying out enquiries at the two storey flat stands above a bargain shop this morning.

Station Commander Andy Rainey said: ‘The fire service were called at 1:21 this morning and arrived on scene four minutes later where a severe fire greeted them.

‘Crews using breathing operators were dispatched and recued one lady and three children from the flat, who were then conveyed to hospital.

‘We were supported by police and paramedic at the scene and currently investigations in the cause of the fire are underway.

‘Fire crews from Northfield and Woodgate Valley were the original attending crews and they were joined by crews from Hayden Cross, Smethwick and Bourne Brook, Kings Norton, and West Brom.’
