Westen Sydney lawyer Monique Tavares got engaged to NBA star Marcos Louzada just nine months after they first met – and moved to America after a crazy impromptu proposal changed her life forever.

Tavares first met the rising star small forward and shooting guard in April 2021 after he reached out to her on Instagram.

The Western Sydney University law graduate was working as a dispute litigator for the ABC before Louzada proposed in romantic style in November last year.

Tavares had to face a long-distance reality in the early stages of their relationship as Didi was drafted by the New Orlean Pelicans and moved to the US immediately.

The former Sydney Kings star was the number 35 pick in the 2019 NBA draft, but Tavares said she knew nothing about basketball at the time and was totally oblivious to her new boyfriend’s standing in the game.

‘We fell in love with each other for reasons completely unrelated to basketball,’ Ms Tavares told the Daily Telegraph.

‘If I wasn’t living this life myself and experiencing it myself, I probably wouldn’t believe it.

The young lawyer spent seven months apart from the star, who only played seven minutes on the court for New Orleans, recording one assist and two rebounds before being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

As soon as Tavares touched down in New Orleans, Louzada proposed in front of a big ‘Marry Me?’ sign aided by candlelight and white flower petals.

‘As soon as he came here (New Orleans) he said he knew he was going to ask me to marry him because he just couldn’t bear doing life without me,’ she said.

‘There’s so many reasons why we shouldn’t have worked out, aside from language barriers, living in different countries and lockdown, we met at the hardest time.’

Tavares now documents her NBA wag day-to-day life through TikTok, where she has amassed 45,000 followers.

Tavares said she will not through her career away, but is enjoying her new life as an ‘NBA wife’, learning Portuguese and planning her wedding.

Louzada, 29, averaged nine points, three rebounds and 21 minutes played per game for the Sydney Kings in 2021.
