Glamorous viral Olympian Luana Alonso returns to training – despite retiring from swimming – after being cautioned for ‘inappropriate conduct’ in the athletes village

  • Alonso is since thought to have returned to the United States, where she studies
  • COP head of mission called out her athlete after her hasty exit from the complex

Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso has resurfaced in the wake of reportedly being removed from the Olympic village after creating an ‘inappropriate atmosphere’ with her behaviour.

The glamorous athlete went viral on social media during the two-week competition despite failing to qualify for the semi-finals in her 100m butterfly event in Paris.

But Alonso’s newfound notoriety had more to do with her hasty exit from the French capital.

Team chiefs are thought to have had an issue with the swimmer distracting her team-mates, scheduling trips in Paris away from the village, and sporting her own choice of outfits rather than wearing the team’s uniforms.

Alonso herself posted a missive on social media that claimed she ‘didn’t want to make a statement’ but was ‘not going to let the lies affect me either’.

The 20-year-old has since returned to social media to post a picture of herself back in competitive mode at the gym.

Alonso tagged her athletic sponsor in the post, which appeared to suggest she was gearing up for a return to the pool.

But the swimmer retired from the discipline shortly after the completion of her time at the Games.

Alonso previously swam for Southern Methodist University and Virginia Tech at collegiate level.

‘Swimming: thank you for allowing me to dream, you taught me to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline and many more,’ Alonso posted two weeks ago, three years on from competing in her first Olympic Games in Tokyo.

‘I gave you part of my life and I don’t change it for anything in the world because I lived the best experiences of my life, you gave me thousands of joys, friends from other countries that I will always carry them in my heart, unique opportunities.

‘It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon.’

Alonso’s exit from the Olympic village ahead of schedule, which the retired athlete has been keen to stress was her decision, remains shrouded in mystery.

Speaking to Le Parisien last week, the Paraguay Olympic Committee said the swimmer left of her own free will, but insisted that the youngster made other athletes and the country’s delegation feel uncomfortable.

A representative of the committee told the French outlet: ‘She withdrew from swimming and therefore left. She was never excluded.

‘As she stopped, she began to behave in an individualistic way and not as a member of the team.

‘That’s what made the other athletes and the delegation uncomfortable. That’s all. There is no big drama.’

But a more damning statement issued by head of the COP mission Larissa Schaerer said that Alonso’s presence had been ‘creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay’.
