Former Chelsea and Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has named his surprise pick to be a candidate for the PFA Player of the Year award.

Man City stars Phil Foden and Rodri have been viewed as leading contenders to win the coveted prize, along with Arsenal’s Declan Rice.

Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk are seen as potential contenders from Liverpool as the Reds chase the Premier League title in Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge.

Johnson believes another Liverpool star should also be seen as a contender for the PFA Player of the Year prize.

The former England international has put forward Darwin Nunez as his surprise pick following an impressive second season at the club.

‘I’d probably go with a surprise, someone like Darwin Nunez,’ Johnson told Squawka.

‘People were saying that he doesn’t score enough goals, but when you think about the way that he plays, he’s probably the last person that you want to play against in the Premier League and that’s saying something with the other players that are available.

‘Yeah I’d probably go with someone like Nunez because he’d probably be the first striker, other than Haaland, that I’d want in my team.’

The Uruguayan has scored 18 goals in 45 matches in all competitions this season, with the 24-year-old playing a vital role after a mixed debut campaign.

His haul has included 11 goals and eight assists in 29 Premier League matches.

Only Salah has scored more for Liverpool in the Premier League this season.
