Goalkeeper, 37, scores a HAT-TRICK of penalties in Greek fourth division match, as he wrongfoots his opposite number each time – channeling Chelsea star Jorginho with a hop, skip and a jump for two of them
- A Greek goalkeeper scored a hat-trick on Sunday in the country’s fourth division
- Grigoris Athanasiou scored three penalties in their 3-0 win for Pavlos Melas
- The 37-year-old sent the Aetos Vassilikon goalkeeper the wrong way each time
- Only one goalkeeper, Jose Luis Chilavert, has ever scored a professional treble
A goalkeeper in Greece’s fourth division has achieved what only one professional shot stopper has done before and scored a hat-trick of penalties in a league game.
Veteran goalkeeper Grigoris Athanasiou scored all three goals in amateur side Pavlos Melas beat Aetos Vassilikon 3-0 on Sunday, with the treble coming completely via spot kicks.
Athanasiou scored two spot-kicks in the first-half and remained victorious in the battle of wits against the Aetos Vassilikon No 1 to net a third penalty after the interval.

The Pavlos Melas keeper slotted home his first penalty in the first of three in a 3-0 win
The 37-year-old then gave the Aetos Vassilikon keeper no chance with a high finish in the net
The 37-year-old even managed to wrongfoot his opposite man in each of the penalties, in a hop-skip-jump move similar to that of Chelsea midfielder Jorginho when the Italian takes spot kicks.
Only one goalkeeper is known to have scored a hat-trick in a league game, with that achievement coming in similar circumstances to Athanasiou’s back in 1999.
Paraguayan goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert netted a treble for Velez Sarsfield in their 6–1 victory over Ferro Carril Oeste in the Argentinian top-flight, with all of the goals coming via penalties.
Chilavert was known for his technical ability on the ball, as well as his good goalkeeping skills, and managed to score 67 career goals via free-kicks and penalties.
Athanasiou then completed his hat-trick in the second-half by slotting home a third penalty
Velez Sarsfield’s Jose Luis Chilavert is the only keeper to have scored a professional hat-trick
The goalkeeper, who retired from the game in 2003 as the second-highest scoring goalkeeper of all-time behind Rodrigo Ceni, even scored eight goals for his country, with half of them coming in Paraguay’s 2002 World Cup qualification campaign.
Athanasiou, meanwhile, began his career in Greece’s top-flight and spent a decade at that level with Akratitos and Ergotelis, before moving to Cyprus to sign for Ayia Napa.
After returning to Ergotelis in 2015, who had been relegated from the top-flight, he spent another season at the club before moving to Crete to sign for AO Chania.
At 37, he finds himself in the amateur game but he seems to be enjoying life in an attacking sense, rather than a defensive one.
