Gold coast accused cocaine trafficker is bashed behind bars

An alleged cocaine trafficker has applied for bail shortly after being savagely attacked while behind bars at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre.

Gold Coast man Alex John Arandale, 23, was arrested in the middle of a busy Southport street when police swooped on a black Holden Commodore ute he was travelling in.

The arresting officers were part of an undercover sting, dressed as tradesmen, and had a police dog with them the Gold Coast Bulletin reported.

The stunning arrest was caught on camera by witnesses nearby.

It’s alleged six other inmates attacked Arandale while he was making his way to the toilet, allegedly using pool cues and fists to batter the man on Monday.

As a result he was moved to a protective cell which his defence solicitor Lee Quinn of Hannay Lawyers said had made their application process difficult.

During the bail application hearing in the Southport Magistrates Court Mr Quinn argued his client had every intention of adhering to his bail conditions.

Mr Quinn also said Arandale would be ‘under the thumb’ of his pregnant girlfriend while he would also participate in a variety of programs and attempt to find new work.

However Magistrate Clare Kelly denied Arandale’s bail application on the grounds of ‘unacceptable risk’.

Magistrate Kelly said the police case against Arandale was too strong to overlook and the alleged amount of cocaine in his possession at the time of arrest, 63.1g, was also a contributing factor in bail denial.

The decision by Magistrate Kelly left Arandale’s girlfriend in tears while Arandale himself struck a wall in the dock.

If found guilty of the charges of trafficking dangerous drugs, serious organised crime and recruiting a person to become participant in criminal organisation, Arandale will face a mandatory seven year sentence.
