Golden moment! Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi BOTH win high jump gold as duo make joint-decision to be crowned Olympic champions after failing to be separated during thrilling final
Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi and Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim both won the gold medal in the Olympic men’s high jump after being offered the chance to share the top prize by the official.
Tamberi failed to clear the bar with his final jump and embraced Barshim as they went to speak to the official and the Qatari asked ‘Can we not have two golds?’
The official responded ‘It’s possible if you both decide’ and before he had finished speaking Barshim offered Tamberi his hand to agree to sharing the gold and the pair embraced before Tamberi wheeled away in celebration.
Gianmarco Tamberi won the gold meda in the men’s high jump along with Mutaz Essa Barshim
Barshim tied with Tamberi and the pair agreed to both take the gold medal when offered it
Maksim Nedasekau of Belarus came third to take the bronze.
