Oakmont Country Club proved a frustrating and grueling task for anyone fortunate enough to play at the US Open this week. Unfortunately, one golfer appeared to have taken that frustration out in a not-so-healthy way.

According to Todd Schuster, also known as ‘Tron Carter’ of the golf content site ‘No Laying Up’, former US Open champion Wyndham Clark allegedly smashed up the locker room at the historic Pennsylvania course after missing the cut.

Images appeared of the scene – with two doors damaged from some kind of force from the outside.

The images were met with general scorn from around the golf world for his alleged behavior, however, it did draw commentary from two LIV Golf stars.

2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell commented, ‘This is minimal regards what I’ve seen other players do. Players you would never expect. Oakmont will test any players mental fortitude. Seen it in person. Guess who? 2016.’

McDowell did not clarify in any further posts about the golfer he was referring to with his ‘2016’ comment, which is the year Dustin Johnson won the major tournament.

Fellow LIV rebel Ian Poulter replied to McDowell’s comment, admitting that he’d let his anger get the best of him before.

‘I have inflicted severe Locker destruction through the years at US Opens and paid my fines,’ Poulter remarked. ‘Generally they have been our temporary build lockers. Not members lockers. Not that that’s an excuse. Generally it’s been when I’ve felt the USGA have pushed the limits over the edge.’

Clark has not directly addressed the claims either on his social media or in any other account.

The 2023 US Open champion did, however, apologize for his actions at last month’s PGA Championship at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Clark let out his frustration at the course’s 16th hole during the second round by violently whipping his driver backwards – destroying an advertising board.

In a statement at the time, Clark said, ‘I would like to sincerely apologize for my behavior yesterday on Hole 16. As professionals, we are expected to remain professional even when frustrated and I unfortunately let my emotions get the best of me.

‘My actions were uncalled for and completely inappropriate, making it clear that I have things I need to work on. I hold myself to a high standard, trying to always play for something bigger than myself, and yesterday I fell short of those standards. For that I am truly sorry. I promise to better the way I handle my frustrations on the course going forward, and hope you can all forgive me in due time.’

Since winning the US Open at the Los Angeles Country Club in 2023, Clark has missed the cut in four of eight major tournament appearances. His best finish since that win was at the Open Championship in 2023 at Royal Liverpool.
