- The Norwegian world No 8 was gearing up to feature in The Sentry in Hawaii
- Fellow golf star Collin Morikawa joked he was planning on protecting himself
- Jack Nicklaus Award-winner Scottie Scheffler will also be MIA after shock injury
Viktor Hovland has suffered a freak bedroom injury resulting in the golf star breaking his toe.
The world No 8 has been enjoying a period of festive rest and relaxtion ahead of the first PGA Tour event of the year in Hawaii, the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua.
But the Norwegian’s chances of making a deep run in the season opener took a dent on Saturday, with Hovland sharing the news on Instagram.
The 27-year-old shared a picture of an X-ray of his foot and explained the injury in the caption, writing: ‘Bed frame 1 – 0 me’.
While Hovland did not confirm or deny whether he would be able to start with the pack on January 2, he received well-wishes from both his followers and his peers after sharing the photograph.
Fellow PGA star Collin Morikawa seemed particularly keen to avoid suffering the same fate.

Scottie Scheffler is confirmed to miss The Sentry after suffering his own freak accident on Christmas Day
The 27-year-old commented under the picture: ‘I’m wrapping myself in some bubble wrap on the way to Hawaii.’
But while Morikawa and Hovland’s chances of making the green for the start of the season on Thursday still seem likely, there will be one key omission from the pack after another freak injury to one of the sport’s stars.
Scottie Scheffler was preparing Christmas dinner on December 25 when small pieces of glass got into his hand in a bizarre accident.
This in turn forced him to undergo surgery as ‘small glass fragments’ remained in his right hand.
The current World No. 1 is set to now spend up to a month recovering.
‘On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass. Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery,’ his manager Blake Smith said in a statement on Friday.
‘He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry.
‘His next scheduled tournament is The American Express.’
