A man and woman have been killed in a horrific two car crash on an outback road near Dubbo but three young children were pulled alive from the wreckage of one of the vehicles.

About 4pm on Friday, emergency services responded to a call-out to Goolma Road, 77 odd kilometres east of the regional centre of Dubbo in central west NSW.

Crews arrived to find the wreckage of two vehicles which had collided.

A 29-year-old man driving a Ford Falcon ute and a 63-year-old female passenger in a Toyota Landcruiser Prado were pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency teams, firefighters and rescue specialists, then worked together to pull an adult man, woman and three young children from the smashed-up Toyota.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Craig Hall said it was a ‘very distressing scene’.

Survivors were treated beside the wreckage by paramedics before the three children were airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney.

A woman in her 20s was taken to Mudgee Hospital with abdominal pains.

Two have died and five more have sustained serious injuries in a rural car crash, three children were airlifted to hospital from alongside the wreckage on Goolma Road (pictured)

‘Paramedics called for blood supplies to be sent from Mudgee Hospital and we had four rescue helicopters on scene,’ said Inspector Hall, reported the ABC.

‘Incidents such as these are always confronting, but particularly so when children are involved.’

Police said their investigators are still working to understand the nature of the crash on the two lane regional highway.

‘Officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District established a crime scene, which will be examined by specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit,’ said police.

‘An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is underway.’

The extensive rescue effort included crews from Fire and Rescue NSW and the VRA.

Traffic between Wellington and Gulgong, located at each end of Goolma highway, was diverted to other local highways.
