Grade II-listed cottage seen in The Vicar of Dibley hits market for £900,000

A Grade II-listed cottage that featured in The Vicar of Dibley has gone on the market for the first time in 60 years for £900,000.

Church Cottage in the picturesque, Chilterns village of Turville, Buckinghamshire, is adjoined to the fictional home of Reverend Geraldine Granger, played by Dawn French.

Turville doubled as Dibley in the BBC sitcom from 1994 to 2007.

The quintessential English village comprises of cottages that date from the 16th century and – situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – is surrounded by idyllic farmland and woodland.

Turville has also been the backdrop for many films and television shows, including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Goodnight Mr Tom, Midsomer Murders and Killing Eve.

It has been the home of one tenant since the early 1960s, marking the first time in more than 60 years since it was last on the market.

But it has been untouched in those decades and does now require a complete renovation.

Savills, who are selling the property, say it is a great opportunity for a new owner who is looking to ‘own a piece of TV history’.

The house has 870 sq ft of living space with a kitchen/breakfast room, sitting room and bathroom on the ground floor, a cellar, and two double bedrooms on the first floor.

Both bedrooms also have a view of the iconic Cobstone Windmill, which appeared in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as the home of Dick Van Dyke’s character Caractacus Potts.

Charlie Chavasse from Savills, who are selling the cottage, said: ‘The sale is an opportunity to own a piece of British television history in a village that is no stranger to the spotlight.

‘Film crews have been coming here since the 1960s when Cobstone Windmill featured in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

‘Accessed from the front via the grounds of St Mary the Virgin Church, the front door opens into the sitting room and enjoys a dual aspect and open fireplace.

‘The kitchen can be found on the other side of the property and has access to a cellar, while to the rear of the sitting room is a lobby and ground floor bathroom.

‘Stairs from the sitting room lead to the first floor, where there are two double bedrooms with views overlooking the village green, church and the hilltop up to Cobstone Windmill.

‘The rear garden meanwhile is predominantly laid to lawn with a timber shed.. Subject to planning permission there may also be an opportunity to extend the property.’

The owners, who do not want to be named, said: ‘It has been very exciting to own a property that has appeared in such a popular sitcom and its connection with the Vicar of Dibley has often proved an interesting talking point among friends and family.

‘It was lovely to see the house on screen and I hope the new owners will be very happy here.’
