Graeme McDowell is BANNED for breaching LIV Golf’s anti-doping policy – as ex-US Open winner admits using a nasal spray for a ‘better sleep’

  • Graeme McDowell violated the anti-doping policy during LIV Golf Nashville
  • The next LIV Golf event takes place across August 16-18 at Greenbrier

Golf star Graeme McDowell has been suspended by Saudi-backed LIV Golf for violating the organisation’s anti-doping policy during LIV Golf Nashville.

The Northern Irishman will be banned from one event and fined by $125,000 (£98,000).

The 2010 US Open winner will miss the LIV Golf Greenbrier across August 16-18 and has admitted his mistake in a statement on X.

In his post, McDowell explained that the reason for his ban was his use of a ‘generic’ Vicks nasal spray, which is typically used for stuffy noses and has reportedly contained a prohibited substance, R-methamphetamine (levo-methamphetamine).

‘Ahead of LIV Nashville, I was struggling with severe congestion that was affecting my sleep,’ he wrote. ‘In an effort to manage it, I used a generic Vicks nasal decongestant without realising it might be on the banned list.’

‘As a professional golfer, I understand the importance of checking all medications and the option to apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

‘Unfortunately, I did not think to do this due to the over-the-counter nature of this medicine and I deeply regret the oversight.

‘I fully accept the sanctions imposed by LIV.’

However, the golfer divulged that the organisation’s anti-doping policy could be particularly strict, yet he stated that he respects its rules.

‘LIV’s anti-doping policy is designed to be thorough and transparent. Unlike some other tours LIV enforces these rules rigorously, which made this situation particularly challenging for me.

‘However, I accept the rules and penalties – they are essential for maintaining the integrity of the sport.

He added: ‘I’m proud of my 22-year career and the way I’ve conducted myself through it.

‘Now, I’m focused on moving forward and getting back on the golf course.

‘I look forward to seeing everyone at LIV Chicago!’
