Graham Potter considered for a return to management with Sweden… as the country’s FA confirms the former Brighton and Chelsea boss is ‘on the list’ of potential candidates

Graham Potter has been included on the Sweden FA’s list of candidates to become the next manager of their men’s national team.

Sweden have begun a search for a new manager to succeed Janne Andersson following a dismal Euro 2024 campaign.

The Swedish FA confirmed last month that Andersson would leave his role should the nation fail to reach next summer’s tournament in Germany.

Their qualification hopes were ended during the last international break as Austria joined Belgium in advancing from Group F, with Sweden nine points off the pace.

Andersson will remain in charge for Sweden’s final two qualifiers, but thoughts have turned to his successor.

Swedish FA secretary general Andrea Mollerberg has confirmed that former Brighton and Chelsea boss Potter is among the names under consideration.

‘You can say this, the list of names that have been sent to me or that I am reading, it is clear that he is part of that list,’ Mollerberg told Swedish channel TV4.

‘We’ll see what we filter down and who is interested in this role.

‘You probably have to be passionate about wanting to be the national team coach, especially given that it is different from club football. 

‘You may have to be ready with certain parts.’

Potter had enjoyed a successful spell in charge of Swedish side Ostersunds, serving as the club’s manager from 2011 to 2018.

The 48-year-old caught the eye in leading Ostersunds to three promotions in five years.

Potter guided Ostersunds to the Swedish Cup in 2017, with the club then embarking on a memorable run in the Europa League.

Ostersunds run was ended in the knock-out stage by Arsenal, despite the Swedish side earning a 2-1 win over the Gunners at the Emirates.

Potter moved to Swansea following his Ostersunds success, before an impressive spell in charge of Brighton.

He remains out of work following an ill-fated spell in charge of Chelsea, having been sacked in April after less than seven months in the post.

French club Lyon made an approach for Potter last month, but he turned down the potential move to Ligue 1.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet have reported that Elfsborg manager Jimmy Thelin is among the other candidates being assessed for the national team job.

Jens Gustafsson, the manager of Polish side Pogon Szczecin, and Djurgarden’s head coaches Kim Bergstrand and Thomas Lagerlof are also claimed to be in contention.
