Grampians couple found in Victoria national park after going missing

A couple who went on a weekend four-wheel driving trip to a remote national park in western Victoria have been found. 

A full-scale search operation in the Grampians – three hours west of Melbourne – was launched on Monday morning after the couple failed to return on Sunday evening.

The couple, a 50-year-old man from Murrumbeena and a 37-year-old woman from Oakleigh East, were found on Monday afternoon.

It’s understood the couple became bogged on a road without phone reception. 

The alarm was raised by family members after the couple failed to return home on Sunday evening and pick up their dogs.

The couple had sent a photo of themselves in the vicinity of Glenelg River Road around 8.20pm on Saturday night, which helped police pinpoint their location.

Officers earlier said they were concerned for their welfare as the area is isolated, densely vegetated and the roads are boggy.

Acting Sergeant Kim Talbot said the pair had checked out of the Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld about 11am Sunday but hadn’t been heard from since.

‘Every track in the Grampians really hasn’t been accessible because it’s been too wet,’ Acting Sergeant Talbot said.

‘Every road I go down to get to that area has a gate on it that’s shut, because the roads are washed out and in a bad condition.’

The couple were found in their car, a blue Toyota Hilux registration LIACOS.

It’s understood the couple had little access to food and water.

Police Air Wing along with local officers on the ground, Search and Rescue police supported by State Emergency Services personnel area searched the region.
