Grandma spending first Christmas without late husband is gifted box with their old letters

Grandma spending her first Christmas without her husband of 59 years is gifted a memory box filled with letters they wrote to each other in 1962 – which she didn’t know he’d kept

  • Barbara Jordan’s husband passed away seven months ago, and this was her first Christmas without him in six decades
  • While going through his stuff, her family had found old letters they’d exchanged in the early ’60s
  • They packaged them in an engraved mirrored box and gave them to her for Christmas
  • Video recorded by Barbara’s granddaughter shows her breaking down in tears
  • She said it’s ‘the best gift she could’ve asked for’

Seven months after her husband of 59 years passed away, a Virginia woman was brought to tears by a thoughtful Christmas present in his memory.

Twitter user @ForeverLAS_ tweeted on December 25 that this was her grandmother’s first Christmas without her husband, after six whole decades spent together.

To pay tribute to him, she and her family gathered together old letters that the couple had written to each other back in the 1960s, and packed them up in a lovely box for grandma on Christmas Day.

@ForeverLAS_ shared video of the moment they gave the gift to her grandmother, whose name according to the letters is Barbara Jordan.

‘My grandpa passed 7 months ago so this is my grandma’s 1st Xmas w/o him in 59 years,’ she explained.

‘For Christmas we decided to gift her w/ letters we found her & my grandpa wrote to each other in 1962 while they were in college. He kept them all these years.’

Barbara never knew that her husband had held onto them.

The clip shows the family helping Barbara open the box, setting a pretty mirrored box in her lap.

The top appears to have words etched into it, as well as a heart.

‘Oh my gosh,’ Barbara says, her voice quivering. As she reads the inscription, she breaks down in tears.

She takes a moment, holding her hand over her mouth and tearing up as her family comes to rub her on the back and shoulders.

They finally urge her to open it, and she breaks down in sobs as she finds the letters inside.

When her son tells her he was going through dad’s room when he found them, she comments on the addresses on the envelopes — including her first room at Virginia State, when she was a college student.

@ForeverLAS_ later showed off some of the letters, still with the envelopes.

She also assured viewers that her grandmother ‘appreciated it… very much.’

‘She is doing great & has been saying over & over again that it’s the best gift she could’ve asked for,’ she said.
