Grandmother dies after being attacked in St Albans

A grandmother who was brutally bashed while she walked her dogs has died in hospital.

Le Ngoc Le, 77, was walking her two dogs in St Albans on Thursday night when she was allegedly attacked by Amy Tran, 30.

The elderly woman was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition where she died Monday afternoon, according to 9 News.

Tran yawned, smiled and laughed in court Monday morning when she heard Ms Le was likely to die in hospital, News Corp reported.

The court heard the 30-year-old, who has been living in a half-way house, suffers from schizophrenia and denied she did anything wrong.

When Tran was handed court papers about her prior convictions she said it was ‘not relevant, mate,’ according to the publication.

‘I heard that I was blamed for hitting someone … I deny that,’ Tran said.

‘I haven’t hurt anyone.’

The 30-year-old first sparked outrage after she was pictured smiling when she was arrested and handcuffed on Friday morning.

She was charged with intentionally causing serious injury, and continued to smile as she was led into Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, Herald Sun reported.

Police allege that Tran assaulted Ms Le on Thursday night while she was with her dogs in Willaton Street, west of Melbourne, causing ‘horrific head injuries’.

Ms Le was discovered lying in a pool of blood by her neighbours and was in an induced coma at Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Her ‘devastated’ son maintained a bedside vigil after his mother was admitted.

The accused was arrested at a property about 100m away from where the brutal attack took place.

A homicide detective told the court Tran has a prior criminal history including assault with a weapon, trafficking and selling heroin and methamphetamines as well as failing to answer bail.

Tran was denied bail and is expected to face court on May 28.
