A couple have been praised for creating a ‘beautiful’ personal toy box bench for their 15-month-old granddaughter.

Donna Hopkins and her husband, from Swansea, created their own homemade bench to give to their granddaughter Maddie this year for Christmas, and shared the finished product on the Facebook group, DIY On A Budget Official.

The project, which cost £90 in total, was completed using paint testers, seat foam, wadding and material, ready made letters and two types of glue – all purchased from high street stores.

The post garnered hundreds of comments from members who hailed the present as ‘priceless’, and Donna herself insisted she didn’t mind how much she spent because the present was ‘more personal’ this way.

She penned: ‘This is a Christmas present I made for my 15-month-old granddaughter.

‘Cost me about £90 for the box and materials but still cheaper than other prices online and more personal as its made by her nanna.’

The grandmother then explained that to make the bench she used a flat-pack box from eBay, pre-made letters and stars from Hobby Craft, pink and grey Dulux paint testers and seat foam from Dunelm.

She also used seat wadding, grey material and fabric glue from The Range paired with all-purpose glue from Hobbycraft.

How Donna made her personalised toy box bench

Donna explained: ‘My husband built the box, I painted letters and stars with Dulux testers, did three coats on each. Glued them all on with Bostik multi purpose glue.’

For the seat: Cut foam to slightly smaller than the lid’ and place ‘wadding on top of foam and cut it the same size as foam.

Use fabric glue to attach wading to foam use bobby pins to secure it overnight to set.

Once dried remove bobby pins then place wdading side downwards on to material.

Fold material so there’s about 2 inches all around the foam side. Fold it over as if wrapping a present.

Then put fabric glue on the foam and press the material on it using bobby pins to secure it. Once dried remove bobby pins.

Cut a piece of material to cover the underneath of the seat. Fold the edges of the material slightly so it looks neat.

Apply fabric glue and use bobby pins to secure again. Once dried remove pins and seat is done.
