Xhaka was seen receiving treatment in the first half of his side’s 2-0 win over Italy in the last 16, though continued on to finish the game, seemingly without any further issues.

He appeared to have been feeling the pain in the fallout of the game, however, causing him to go for tests.

Manager Murat Yakin has employed a back three system for Switzerland throughout their run in Germany so far, the same system Xhaka has been used to under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.

The midfielder made 50 appearances as Leverkusen went unbeaten on their way to winning the Bundesliga, not tasting defeat in the season until the Europa League final against Atalanta.

For Switzerland, he has been playing alongside Nottingham Forest’s Remo Freuler, though his side faced needing to find a solution to his absence if the test results returned bad news.

The midielder is set to train on his own on Tuesday, though is expected to be fit to start at the weekend.

Luke Shaw, though in full training with the team, is yet to play a minute, meanwhile, which could leave Gareth Southgate scratching his head for a solution in the position.
