Great Britain’s women’s curlers at risk of failing to qualify for the semi-finals in Beijing

Great Britain’s women’s curlers need to beat bottom-placed China and hope other results go their way after a surprise 8-4 defeat to China left their semi-final hopes in jeopardy

  • Great Britain’s women’s curlers suffered a shock defeat by host nation China
  • Eve Muirhead and Co find themselves in fifth ahead of last tie against Russia
  • Even if they win, they would still rely on results elsewhere to creep through
  • Should they fall short, it would be underwhelming for the slim shot at a medal

Eve Muirhead’s curlers are in serious danger of failing to qualify for the semi-finals after a surprise 8-4 defeat against China.

The rink of Muirhead, Vicky Wright, Jen Dodds, and Hailey Duff are now stuck in fifth after four wins and four losses, with only one tie remaining against bottom-placed Russia.

If they win, as expected, they would still be reliant on results elsewhere to creep through. If they fall short, it would be a hugely underwhelming outcome for a team that was considered an outside shot at a medal.

Muirhead, a 2014 bronze medallist, said: ‘It’s a little frustrating, we are playing really well as a team and we’ve had some great performances since winning the Europeans and coming through the qualifying tournament.

‘It would have been nice to have had a bit more time together as a team but we’ve done what we can within the pandemic.

‘Things haven’t quite gone our way but there is still time for that to change.’

She added: ‘We need to hope a few results go our way but because we beat Japan and USA, we need to hope they drop a game.

‘We need to come out and concentrate on our performance against Russia and focus on what we can do and then hope the curling Gods are on our side.

‘It’s been one of those weeks, sometimes you get the rubs and sometimes nothing seems to go your way.

‘The teams we are playing are really up to beat us. We know we can beat Russia but we need to chat with our coaches and iron out the mistakes we made.’
