Great British Bake Off fans slam ‘worst ever’ technical challenge after slew of raw sponges – as viewers claim contestants weren’t given enough time

The Great British Bake Off was embroiled in scandal on Tuesday evening after the ‘worst ever’ technical challenge.

The bakers were tasked with creating six orange and ginger treacle puddings with creme anglaise for a gruelling dessert week.

But all seven remaining bakers appeared to run out of time, resulting in raw and undercooked bakes.

In a series first, none of the bakers delivered a stand-out result and all appeared to fail, in what viewers dubbed a ‘car crash’.

Judge Paul Hollywood took one look at the bench before storming away, declaring: ‘That is disgusting.’

Meanwhile Prue Leith said the results were the ‘worst thing’ she’d ever judged on the Channel 4 show.

Some of the cakes would barely stay on the plate and were so raw that they ran off the side.

They were then judges from ‘worst to least worst’ with Tasha winning the challenge for her ‘not as terrible but still pretty terrible’ cake.

Paul said: You let me down, you let yourselves down…consider yourselves roasted.’

Alison Hammond tried to lift the mood by arguing: ‘At least you’re all roughly on the same level…’

The episode ultimately saw Saku leave the tent and Dan win star baker.

But viewers were left furious at what they saw as an ‘unfair’ challenge set up for disaster by the judges.

One said: ‘We had a good run of achievable technical challenges but then we arrived at this week and I’m furious all over again – give them enough time!! To do!! The challenge!!’

Another noted that: ‘So every single person mucked up, but we’re STILL not gonna suggest that they’re not giving them enough time?’

However, others enjoyed the chaos that had ensued, with one saying: ‘This technical is an absolute car crash and I’m here for it’.
