Great white shark stalks coastline where humpback whale washed up

  • A humpback whale carcass has washed up on a South Australian beach
  • A great white shark has been spotted just metres from the carcass
  • Experts say the whale looks young and likely died from illness

A large great white shark has been spotted stalking the coastline of a beach where the carcass of a humpback whale washed up.

The whale carcass, believed to be seven or eight metres long, was discovered at Fisherman’s Bluff, 60km north of Port Lincoln at the weekend, 9 News reported.

The humpback whale’s cause of death is not known and although it has many lacerations there are no obvious marks form sea predators.

The great white has been seen swimming in the shallow waters, within metres of the rotting carcass.

One expert told 9 News the whale appeared to be very lean for its age which lead them to think the animal died of illness.

Officials from South Australia’s environment department are expected to inspect the carcass.

Whale watching season is about to pick up in South Australia and the carcass will go down as the sixth whale sighting of the season, not exactly the sighting most would have expected.
