Footage has emerged of the dramatic moment police tracked down a man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl while sunbathing at a popular beach.

Western Australia Police launched a desperate search after a man allegedly approached and indecently touched a girl, 17, in a brazen attack while she was lying on the sand at Madora Bay, 66km south of Perth on Monday.

He was captured on CCTV leaving the beach shortly afterwards and seen walking towards Karinga Road.

The girl reported the alleged incident as police launched a public appeal for help n tracking down her alleged attacker and released images of a long-haired man leaving the beach.

Within 24 hours, Mandurah detectives had arrested a 48-year-old man at his Greenfields home following a tip-off from the community.

Footage shows the barefoot man dressed in a T-shirt and pants in handcuffs being escorted from the home by police.

He was charged with unlawful and indecent assault and spent the night behinds bars.

The man will appear in Mandurah Magistrates Court later on Wednesday.

Detectives thanked the community for their help in tracking down the alleged attacker.

‘On Monday afternoon we made an appeal to our local community to assist us with this investigation, and the response we received was significant,’ Detective Senior Sergeant Tony Rosenberg said

‘Our appeal was shared widely via social media and the arrest we have made is a direct result of information members of the community provided to Crime Stoppers.

‘On behalf of Mandurah Detectives and local police I thank everyone who shared our appeal, and thank those community members who contacted Crime Stoppers with information which proved to be vital to our investigation.’
