These incredible pictures show a group of hardy sailors swimming among icebergs off the coast of Greenland in seas and pools where water temperatures plunge below freezing.

The sailors, who say they always put their head underwater despite the cold, run an Iceland-based adventure holiday firm called Aurora Arktika that takes guests to stunning frozen islands only accessible by boat.

Both holidaymakers and sailors swim or paddle-board in the freezing waters.

Haukur Sigurdsson, 33, of Aurora Arktika, said: ‘Many people get a kick out of it – it certainly wakes you up. It’s not dangerous at all, you just have to make sure you don’t stay in too long. Know your limits. In Greenland the water temperature is often below 0 degrees C.’
