Greg Wise admits he ‘messed up hugely’ as he reflects on Strictly elimination

Greg Wise appeared on Monday’s It Takes Two alongside his professional dance partner Karen Hauer and admitted he ‘got the fear’ ahead of his elimination from Strictly Come Dancing on Sunday.

The actor, 55, said of his and 39-year-old Karen’s Samba: ‘For some reason, I got the fear and messed up hugely at the start of the dance.’

He added: ‘Then, I messed up hugely at the start of the dance the second time around.’

Praising her celebrity partner’s determination, Karen added: ‘It was fun. It was exciting. [Greg] did have good hip action, there were hiccups but at the end of the day, it’s how you pick up the dance.

‘He didn’t stop and say ”Oh, I messed up”. The whole thing about the journey and Strictly is how you go on and continue and that’s what you did.’

Greg optimistically referred to his departure from the show as a ‘joyful explosion’, saying: ‘The lovely thing about it was that we were going out to entertain.

‘We were having this joyful explosion and could there be a better way of being kicked off the show than after doing that dance?’

He also shared that he will miss Strictly’s class of 2021 and making his co-stars tasty snacks.

Greg sweetly noted: ‘I’ve been making lovely lunches everyday for Karen. I made everyone jam – I was the jam fairy at the start of it all. I made arancini for the Italian boys because they were missing home and missing their food.

‘I don’t know what anyone’s going to do now I’ve gone!’

Looking back at his best bits from his time on the show, Greg gushed: ‘My Strictly experience has been the most beautiful exploration of a world I never knew.’

Over the weekend, Greg and Karen faced off against comedian Judi, 41, and Graziano, 27, in the dance-off.

But Greg’s samba to Macarena by Los Del Rio was not enough to keep him in the show, with judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton all opting to save Judi.

Head judge Shirley Ballas said she would have voted to save Greg and Karen.

She said: ‘Well I counted all the mistakes and from what I saw I would have saved Greg and Karen.’

Anton added: ‘I felt that the nerves got to both of the couples in the dance-off, which is not surprising really, and they both made quite a lot of mistakes, but one couple maintained an element of composure through the dance, and that would be Judi and Graziano.’

After learning of his elimination, Greg told show host Tess Daly: ‘I have had an amazing time, I feel unbelievably privileged and thank you all for having me.’

Karen added: ‘It has been a blast, thank you for the amazing lunches, thanks for the quality of work, and for being an amazing student. I have enjoyed our moments in the classroom, and just having fun with you, I’ve really enjoyed it.’
