Gregg Berhalter at risk as US Soccer issues ominous warning… while Christian Pulisic stops short of backing coach after Copa America exit

Gregg Berhalter’s position with the US Men’s National Team may be in jeopardy after US Soccer issued an ominous warning about the state of the team. 

While the 50-year-old had been in the hot seat for a while, the United States’ loss to Uruguay – that led to their Copa America exit – on Monday may prove to be the last straw for his tenure. 

Following the 1-0 loss in Kansas City, US Soccer Federation sporting director Matt Crocker expressed his dissatisfaction with the result. 

‘Our tournament performance fell short of our expectations. We must do better,’ Crocker said in the statement. 

‘We will be conducting a comprehensive review of our performance in Copa America and how best to improve the team and results as we look towards the 2026 World Cup.’

Furthermore, USMNT star and captain Christian Pulisic’s comment on his coach, seemingly echoed Crocker’s tone. 

‘Look, we have a good relationship with him,’ he said. ‘Whatever the next step looks like, it’s not my job to decide.’ 

The AC Milan midfielder was visibly frustrated with the officiating during Monday’s game. However, many fans argued that -referees aside – the US played a bad game. 

‘We didn’t get the results we wanted in this tournament and that hurts,’ Pulisic said. ‘That doesn’t mean that we’re a bad team or we haven’t improved.’ 

The USMNT opened their Copa America campaign with a 2-0 win over Bolivia.

Berhalter remains confident that he will be coaching the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

However, they were stunned by Panama, 2-1, in their second game after Tim Weah picked up a red card in the 18th minute and goalkeeper Matt Turner got subbed off with an injury at halftime. 

The team will have decisions to make before the World Cup – which the US will host alongside Canada and Mexico. 

While Berhalter bluntly believes he will still be in charge by then, doubt continues to hover over the team’s future. 

‘I don’t think this tournament really had anything to do with the staff or the tactics or the way we play,’ said USMNT star Gio Reyna. ‘I think it was more individual mistakes. The staff can only do so much. 

‘At the end of the day, the players didn’t do enough to go through.’
