Grey’s Anatomy is renewed for a historic 15th season

Grey’s Anatomy is making television history after being renewed for a 15th season.

The medical drama is currently gearing up for its Season 14 finale which, despite seeing the departure of longtime stars Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew, will not mean the end of the show.

The renewal makes the program ABC’s longest-running primetime drama of all time. In fact, only seven dramas in history have had more seasons.

On top of that, the show has now tied ER as television’s longest-running medical drama.

Although the departures of Capshaw and Drew will mean big changes for the show, Ellen Pompeo is due to return as the titular character Meredith Grey.

The president of ABC Entertainment, Channing Dungey, said of the announcement: ‘Grey’s Anatomy has a special place in my heart and millions of viewers feel the same way.

‘Thanks to fiercely loyal fans who have been on this journey since the beginning, and new generations of viewers who continue to discover the joy and drama of Grey Sloan Memorial, the show is as strong as ever.’

The stats are there to back up that statement. In its 14th season, the show remains the number one program on the network among adults aged 18 to 49 and is among the top five broadcast series on TV.

It was reported earlier this year that Pompeo had already signed a contract locking her into a further two seasons of the popular show.

She also revealed in January to The Hollywood Reporter that she managed to negotiate herself a massive $20m a year salary after her co-star Patrick Dempsey left the show three years ago.

‘For me, Patrick [Dempsey] leaving the show [in 2015] was a defining moment, deal-wise. They could always use him as leverage against me — “We don’t need you; we have Patrick” — which they did for years,’ she said.

‘I don’t know if they also did that to him, because he and I never discussed our deals,’ she added. ‘There were many times where I reached out about joining together to negotiate, but he was never interested in that.

‘At one point, I asked for $5,000 more than him just on principle, because the show is Grey’s Anatomy and I’m Meredith Grey. They wouldn’t give it to me.

‘And I could have walked away, so why didn’t I? It’s my show; I’m the number one. I’m sure I felt what a lot of these other actresses feel: Why should I walk away from a great part because of a guy? You feel conflicted but then you figure, “I’m not going to let a guy drive me out of my own house.”’

Pompeo, who is the highest-paid actress in primetime television, is now listed as a producer on the show.
