Guernsey crash driver was over the limit, inquest finds

A young couple died in a drink driving crash while travelling home from a friend’s wedding reception, an inquest heard.

Speeding driver Stuart Moorat, 27, was two-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit when he crashed his BMW in Guernsey  – killing his girlfriend Georgina Le Prevost, 25.

The tragic pair left the wedding reception at around 11pm with Miss Le Prevost in the front passenger seat.

Around 15 minutes later the car went off the road crashing into a wall and rocks at Le Catioroc on 21 July. No other vehicle was involved.

The inquest heard Moorat reached speeds of more than 60mph and toxicology results showed he had blood alcohol levels of 206mg per 100ml. The legal limit is 80mg per 100ml.

A toxicologist concluded Mr Moorat’s blood alcohol levels were ‘consistent with intoxication’.

He added that despite cannabis also being detected in his blood it was ‘alcohol alone’ that impaired his driving skills.

Accident investigator PC Mat Du Port concluded the car was travelling at 35mph when it left an earth bank and flew through the air.

But he said it would have picked up speed before the initial impact with a wall, likely to be nearer 80mph.

Judge Graeme McKerrell concluded the car had been travelling at ‘no less than 60mph’ on the 35mph limit road, before the crash.

Police vehicle examiner Marc Cox found the car sustained ‘immense impact’ from ‘various directions and angles’ and there were no vehicle faults contributing to the crash.

The inquest had earlier found Mr Moorat’s cause of death was a ‘severe head injury’.

Miss Le Prevost died from ‘positional asphyxia’, Mr Cox said, meaning she was unable to breathe due to the impact.

Ann Wildman, who lives near the crash site, described seeing a car passing her house at ‘a high speed’.

She told police she ‘heard a huge bang and saw headlights of a car going up into the air and twisting around and then turning over, then disappearing’.

Police and people in the area went to the car where they found it was ‘apparent they were dead’, the inquest heard.

At the time of their death, tributes were paid to the couple.

The managing partner of Guernsey law firm Mourant Ozannes, Jessica Roland, said Ms Le Prevost, who was a secretary in the litigation department, was ‘always full of life, laughter and fun’.

She added that her colleagues were ‘deeply saddened by the tragic and unexpected loss’.

She said: ‘Georgie was a kind, beautiful young woman. She truly brought joy to all of those who were lucky enough to work with her during her six years with us, and was a very dear friend to many.

‘We will miss her terribly. Our love and prayers are with her family at this very sad time.’

Sure CEO Ian Kelly described Mr Moorat, who worked at the telecoms company as a security and systems technician, as ‘a popular member of the Sure family’.

‘He will be sorely missed by his colleagues and friends here,’ he added. ‘Our thoughts and condolences go out to his and Georgina Le Prevost’s families at this tragic time.’

The inquest continues.
