Guess who? Aussie ‘rock & roll royalty’ looks unrecognisable during rare TV appearance

He is Australian rock royalty and one of the founding members of a legendary Aussie pub band.

The Sydney-born musician has been active in the music industry since the early 80s and has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including David Bowie and Jon Stevens.

The passionate rocker has developed a reputation for his incredible energy on stage and for never slowing down, as he approaches his 60th birthday.

Of course, it is Steve Balbi, the legendary Australian bass guitarist for Noiseworks, who played on their biggest hits including Take Me Back and No Lies.

Steve appeared on Channel Nine’s Today Extra on Wednesday morning, and shocked co-hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys with his striking appearance.

Balbi has said goodbye to the trademark mullet and clean-shaven appearance he sported in the 80s and in its place he rocked windswept jet-black hair and a stylish goatee.

However, he still sported the same cheeky grin that he did during his younger days.

The energetic performer told the hosts he was excited about the release of his upcoming solo album called Breakdown and his tour of Sydney.

‘I like telling stories and telling it like it is. I love it like an eight-year-old, I can’t wait to get back to it, I feel so grateful,’ Steve began.

‘I try to dress like a rockstar and act like a human being.’

Steve will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Sydney Opera House on Saturday.

Steve shot to fame in 1986 as part of the legendary Australia rock band Noiseworks, fronted by Jon Stevens, who had hits with Take Me Back, No Lies and Touch.

The band broke up in 1992 and later regrouped in 2016.

Balbi remains a part of the band to this day.

He has also had success with his musical side projects Electric Hippies and Mi-Sex.
