Stains from fake tan and heavy make-up on bedding and towels cost the hotel industry nearly £1.8 million a year, according to research.

Laundries are thought to throw away 224 tons of sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers and towels each year after they’ve been soiled by the products.

One hotelier had to throw out a significant amount of linen after hosting a bodybuilding contest at which competitors covered themselves in fake tan.

Linen cleaner Regenex, which came up with the figures, asked whether users of fake tan or make-up who stain hotel sheets should have to pay more.

Paul Hamilton, the technical director at Regenex, said: ‘I talk to many long-suffering laundry owners and managers.

‘They tell me that fake tan and make-up are the stains they dread the most.

‘Margins for the hospitality industry are tight, and hoteliers must recoup such losses where they can. Maybe it is time for them to say impose charges.’

Regenex says demand for its recovery service to restore stained linens has gone up.
