Guide dog fired because he was deemed ‘too friendly’

A guide dog who got fired for being too friendly to strangers while on the job has been given a new home in time for Christmas.

Posting a picture of the pooch on Reddit’s ‘aww’ subreddit channel, user sunshinemoonshine5 revealed details about why he lost his guide dog gig.

The Reddit user captioned the shot of the golden Labrador dressed as a reindeer with: ‘He is a failed guide dog, failed for being too friendly (legit) But he now is a disability support dog and my newest best friend. Every day he enjoys a carrot because he is a very “good boy.”‘

People have been quick to respond to the adorable snap, leaping to the pooch’s defense in their comments and sharing similar stories about guide dogs losing their jobs for being too friendly.

‘A dog that is deemed too friendly is truly a good boy,’ Redditor TooShiftyForYou wrote.

User creamOFthePIE shared: ‘He didn’t fail, he was being guided to your heart.’

‘Most of my friends have failed service dogs,’ another person, identified online as grubas, typed. ‘They are intelligent, friendly, well trained, but somehow, incredibly stupid in really weird ways.’

Redditor thirdculture_hog shared a similar experience, writing: ‘My Doberman failed protection training for the same reason.’

The ‘aww’ subreddit channel typically features pictures of puppies, kittens, babies and small animals. Reddit tells posters to ‘feel free to post pictures and videos of cute things’ in the section.

This is not the first time Reddit users have enjoyed the tale of a dog who failed to complete guide dog training.

‘My favorite from Reddit is a labrador that failed training because he knew every single command and task, but would do them when-the-hell-ever he felt like; opening/closing cabinets and fridge door, turning lights on and off, bringing random items, just cuz he felt like it,’ a user going by the username Just_Lurking2 wrote.

Redditor dafrnhm shared a similar encounter.

‘I do a lot of disability adaption work and I have a customer that has a failed guide dog for the same reasons, a 20-minute job ends up taking two hours because I can’t stop playing with the dog,’ they wrote.

‘He assists the lady by picking things up for her and whilst I’m working he goes around the house and brings me loads of stuff, I turn around and there is books, pillows and all sorts behind me and he just stands there wagging his tail until I say good boy, then he starts taking things back.’
