Guy Pearce reveals what really happened during marriage breakdown

Guy Pearce courageously opened up a bandage talking to Andrew Denton on Interview on Tuesday, as he revealed it was his ex-wife Kate Mestitz who decided to end their 18-year marriage.

‘It’s funny, you know, I’ve spent the last couple of years trying to protect Kate in all of this… and particularly not saying that it was her decision to end our marriage,’ he said.

The former Neighbours star revealed it was difficult when fans labelled him a ‘bastard,’ with many incorrectly assuming he cheated on Kate in 2015.

‘I’ve got people coming up to me saying ‘you’re a bastard for having an affair with Carise and then getting her pregnant, and then leaving your wife,” he said.

‘And I’m going, ‘that’s so not what happened,” he said. 

The Priscilla, Queen of the Desert star admitted he was blindsided when Kate abruptly called it quits.

Opened wounds: ‘As sad as it was for me and as difficult as it was, for her to kind of go, ‘You know what, our time’s up was incredibly strong of her to do,’ Guy said

His reflection revealed that he has a lot of respect and love for Kate to this day.

‘As sad as it was for me and as difficult as it was, for her to kind of go, ‘You know what, our time’s up was incredibly strong of her to do.’ 

‘I just think wow, she’s just more incredible to me now than she was before.’ 

Guy nostalgically reflected on how they met as ‘kids’ when they were only 12-years-old and the difficulty in hearing Kate’s final words to him.

‘The way she put it was that we were probably some of those kids when we got married, too. And so I guess it was sort of a growing apart, you know,’ he said.

When the presenter Andrew Denton said it must’ve been hard for him to hear, Guy admitted he was ‘blindsided.’ 

‘I couldn’t believe it for a long time,’ he added.  

Months after the split, Guy put his heart back on his sleeve and fell in love with Game Of Thrones star Carice van Houten.

He said they fell in love ‘quickly and messily,’ admitting that a baby was what made things happen so fast for them. 

Guy said he told Carise straight-up on how Kate and him split in January 2015 and that he was at his worst when he met the Game of Thrones actress in June the same year.

‘I did say to her ”I’m really at the worst version of me that you could possibly find” but she seemed to find that endearing,’ Guy told Carise. 

The couple welcomed a baby boy named Monte together last year.

He said while Carise and him did have rebound elements to their relationship at the start, the baby forced them to take a step back and mature.   

‘Let’s just go back and start again mature and responsible about this. and work out the best way to be so I’m glad we’re doing that,’ he said.
