Gwyneth Paltrow’s Montecito home gardens suffer mudslides

Gwyenth Paltrow has suffered double heartbreak after the southern Californian mudslides which have wrecked the grounds of her multimillion dollar Montecito home and ‘devastated’ the beautiful boutique hotel where she married Chris Martin.

Paltrow only bought the $4.9 million property, in Tollis Avenue in 2016, which boasted ‘Monet-like gardens’ and stunning water features.

Sadly, it’s the grounds that have been hit hardest by the mudslides that left 17 dead, dozens missing and hundreds trapped inside their homes. The floods dumped thick mud over its lawns and in its ponds and swimming pool, while photos show that sections of her awning and veranda appear to have been torn off.

The actress still hasn’t moved into the Montecito property, which was advertised as a fixer upper on one site, and another listing as ‘vacant land with two existing residential structures,’ which has it has been mired in planning issues after the Shakespeare in Love star’s proposals for a new mansion infuriated her neighbors.

And it’s not just her property portfolio that took a hit on Tuesday.

San Ysidro Ranch, where she tied the knot with Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin, has been all but destroyed by the mudslides. The couple wed in the ranch’s Willow Cottage in a private ceremony on December 5, 2003. They divorced last year but the pair remain friends and have two children together.

The beloved venue for countless celebrity weddings, from Lawrence Olivier’s nuptials with Vivien Leigh in 1940, to Jessica Simpson’s wedding to Eric Johnson in 2014. Hilary Duff and Sandra Bullock both spent their wedding nights at the San Ysidro Ranch.

Even the Kennedys honeymooned here after JFK wed Jacqueline in 1953.

But the ranch, which is nestled 500 acres of gardens in the mountains of Montecito, was ravaged by Tuesday’s mudslides that tore through the wealthy enclave bringing death and destruction to anything that stood in its way.

San Ysidro Ranch said that they had not yet been able to return to the property to assess the full damage.

Photos shows the true depth of devastation.  Many of the property’s 41 individually styled cottages have been buried or wiped out completely.

Ricki Lake, who married Christian Evans in a secret ceremony at the ranch on April 8, 2012 – with just their dogs as guests – tweeted: ‘ OH NO!!! I got married to my beloved there. 🙁 My already broken heart is gutted yet again. #SanYsidroRanch XO.’

The mudslides destroyed 100 houses and damaged 300 others after debris spread across a wide swath of Montecito – a wealthy enclave of about 9,000 people northwest of Los Angeles that is home to a number of high profile celebrities.

The death toll climbed to 17 yesterday as emergency workers pulled bodies from a river of knee-deep mud and continued to search grimy debris and ruins for the more than a dozen people still missing.

Aerial images of the area show that Oprah Winfrey’s $50million estate managed to survive the mudslide. She said her property had suffered some minor damage, but nothing compared to that of her neighbors.

Shocking images that captured the area north of Oprah’s estate show severely damaged homes that were completely engulfed by the river of mud.  She shared video of her in knee-deep mud and debris as she said a fence had been knocked down and that she was ‘devastated’ over the damage to her neighbor’s home.

Talent agent Scooter Braun, who represents the stars such as Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, has also been affected by the mudslides.

Braun, who also owns labels School Boy Records and Raymond-Braun Media Group, shared a photo of the rivers of mud and devastation in his neighborhood on Instagram today.

He revealed he still doesn’t know what state his property is in, but said the situation in Montecito is ‘heartbreaking.’

‘4 years ago my wife and I bought our dream home in montecito and hoped to get married there,’ he wrote. ‘We spent over 2 years slowly restoring our home to what is now our favorite place on earth.

‘To see what it is going through now is heartbreaking. We had just made it through the largest fire in California history and now this.

‘We still don’t know what has become of our home but honestly it is the last thing on our mind. Lives have been destroyed. Family members have been lost. I don’t know what we can do yet but where we can help we will. In the meantime our prayers are with all those in Santa Barbara.’

Many of the victims were located in the mandatory evacuation zone (yellow) but five were in the voluntary evacuation area (red)

Mudslides slammed into homes, covered highways and swept away vehicles early on Tuesday when more than a half-inch (1.5cm) of rain fell in five minutes, a rate that far exceeds the normal flash flood threshold. Pictured above, an aerial view of Montecito following the mudslide
