Hairapy Family: Hairdresser Sami Penn can predict pregnancy and gender by looking at clients hair

An American hairdresser claims she can tell when someone is pregnant before they even know themselves, and she can even predict the sex.

Mum-of-four, Samantha Penn Willoughby, said texture changes, thickness and luster can indicate pregnancy and arise due to hormonal changes.

The stylist, 34, has ‘never been wrong’ when guessing a client is pregnant, but predicting the gender is a slightly less exact science.

‘Hairdressers know all the secrets,’ she said when she shared her methods on TikTok.

‘Yes, hairdressers can tell when you’re pregnant and I’ll tell you how,’ she said.

Samantha needs to be familiar with the client and their usual hair to note the differences that may be caused by pregnancy.

The only way she can tell if a new client is pregnant is if they have ‘pregnancy bands’ from rapid hair growth.

‘The way I can tell is your hair will either not be as curly if it’s normally curly, it will not be as thick or it will be thicker, AND there will be new growth randomly which means,’ she said.

The stylist often has clients asking her to predict their kids gender, she can’t 100 per cent say for sure.

Samantha bases her theory off the saying ‘girls take away your beauty and boys give you beauty.’

According to the stylist, hair is fuller, thicker, and has a better texture when you’re expecting a boy.

‘I have four boys and with each boy I had I had beautiful rapunzel hair!’ she explained. 

However, it’s a completely different story with girls, Samantha clients hair feels ‘oily and wet’ due to an increase in oestrogen.

She also shared one tip every mum should know.

The stylist explained that hair colour can change with pregnancy, so she advises clients to tell their stylist if they are so they can adjust the colour accordingly.

‘If I knew ahead of time you are pregnant I would make the colour not as dark, as sometimes it takes really really dark,’ she explained.

She also said certain treatments such as perms don’t always take in pregnancy, so if she knows of a pregnancy she will change the process or not do it.

Her followers loved the tips and the majority believed in her theories.

‘So true! I Couldn’t even use conditioner whilst pregnant with my girl It was so greasy. Not with my boy though!’ one mum said.

‘I lost all my curls during my pregnancy five years ago. Now it’s just wavy,’ another said.

However, one mum disagreed with the gender prediction theory.

‘My son took all of my beauty. Awful acne; oily, rough hair that hardly grew, nails weren’t much better. I was MAD that wives tale wasn’t true for me,’ she said.
