Hamilton stabbing: Woman dies from stab wounds in Brisbane riverside suburb – as cops charge a 55-year-old female with murder

A 55-year-old woman has been charged with murder after a woman died following a stabbing in an affluent riverfront suburb days out from Christmas.

The alleged killer, who is due before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday, has also been charged with enter with intent in what the police have called ‘a tragic incident’. 

Police were called to a unit complex in Oxford Street, Hamilton in Brisbane’s north-east at about 8.45 on Thursday morning following reports of a disturbance.

A critically injured woman, 43, was found inside a unit suffering from multiple wounds including a stab wound to the chest.

Police and paramedics performed first aid before the woman was rushed to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

After a homicide investigation was launched, the police said a 55-year-old woman was helping them with their inquiries. 

‘Police will allege the two women were known to each other but not in a familial setting,’ a police statement read.

The police confirmed that the two women were neighbours. 

Detective Inspector John Mison also confirmed officers had attended the unit complex previously ‘on a number of occasions’.

‘Police received a triple-0 call this morning and we’re currently in the process of examining that information to try and determine an exact timeline of what occurred,’ he told reporters.

He added that there was no information to suggest the stabbing was a domestic violence incident.

The unit complex is multi-unit public housing run by the Department of Housing.

Homicide detectives set up a crime scene at the unit complex and began door-knocking and interviewing residents.

Forensic officers also attended the scene, gathering evidence in brown paper bags and searching for the weapon involved in the alleged attack. 

‘I have a team of detectives at the scene who will be conducting door-knocks and speaking to witnesses in the vicinity of the location to obtain the complete picture of what occurred this morning,’ Det Insp Mison said. 

‘This is a very sad tragic loss of life.’

‘No matter what information it may be, it may be relevant to our investigation,’ Det Insp Mison said.  

Hamilton is one of the city’s richest suburbs known for its waterfront dining spots on the banks of the Brisbane River.

It was the second stabbing in Brisbane on Thursday morning after a man was knifed in the chest 12.5km away in Annerley in a separate incident.

He was rushed to hospital in a serious condition.

The woman’s death in Hamilton was the second fatal stabbing in Australia within 24 hours.

Real estate agent Julie Seed was allegedly stabbed to death in broad daylight in Adelaide on Wednesday.

Shaun Michaels Dunk, 30, has since been charged with murder.

He will appear at Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.
