He has twice cheated death in horrific high-speed car crashes – now Richard Hammond has revealed that if he has another one, it will be his last.

However, it won’t be fate that stops him – but his wife Mindy, who says she will ban him from his TV stunts the next time he has a major smash.

She has told him ‘three strikes and you’re out’, and Hammond admits: ‘I’ve had my two strikes. I do have to be a bit more careful.’

Speaking exclusively to Event magazine today, the presenter, far right, reveals more details of his last horrific crash, when his £2 million electric Rimac supercar left a Swiss mountain road at 120mph. For the first time, he reveals that the car burst into flames with him inside, adding: ‘That’s why I had to get out… There was a sudden urgency.’

That experience meant he feared brain damage after his latest crash, right, in June while filming Amazon show The Grand Tour with Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

He recalls: ‘The paramedics must have thought I had gone nuts because I was lying there saying, “Right, I’m Richard Hammond… I’m in Switzerland…” to prove to myself that I hadn’t hurt my head again, before calling Mindy. She was incredibly good. She knew that my having the presence of mind to call signalled I really was OK.

‘But don’t imagine she was pleased. Of course she wasn’t!’
