Handcuffed patient, 33, dies in a Sydney hospital after he was restrained by security and paramedics for ‘behavioural concerns’

A man has died in hospital after being shackled to his bed by police, security and paramedics. 

Police were called to Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick, Sydney about 6.30pm on Sunday night due to concerns about the behaviour of a patient. 

On arrival, officers found hospital security and paramedics restraining a 33-year-old man while hospital staff attempted to treat him. 

After the man was handcuffed and placed on a stretcher, he lost consciousness and was unable to be revived.

‘A patient who was scheduled under the Mental Health Act was restrained by hospital security staff while trying to leave Prince of Wales Hospital last night,’ a Prince of Wales spokeswoman said.

The man then went into cardiac arrest and was not able to be resuscitated. 

The matter was referred to the coroner and was being investigated by the police and the hospital.
