Happy Memorial Day from Hollywood 2023: Mark, Emily pay tribute

Memorial Day is here.

Memorial Day tends to mark the unofficial start of summer for many Americans, though the season really begins with the Summer Solstice in mid-June.

The annual holiday – which is celebrated on the last Monday of May – is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces.

Since the Revolutionary War ended, 646,596 American troops have died in battle and more than 539,000 died from other, non-combat related causes.

It was formerly observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970.

Several Hollywood stars paid tribute to the annual holiday, including Chris Pratt, Zac Efron, Cole Hauser, Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg.

Flag etiquette on Memorial Day is unique, according to the Farmers Almanac.

At sunrise, flags are to be raised to full staff briskly, then lowered to half staff position, where they will remain until noon. See guidelines for flying the American Flag.

Traditionally, on Memorial Day (U.S.), volunteers often place small American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time. Consider visiting a local cemetery to place flags; many organizations would be grateful for volunteers. Contact your local American Legion post, Daughters of the American Revolution, or Boy or Girl Scouts troops.

The custom of honoring ancestors by cleaning cemeteries and decorating graves is an ancient and worldwide tradition. In early rural America, it was usually performed in summer and was an occasion for family reunions and picnics.

The ritual of visiting family graves and memorials was never a morbid tradition. Rather, it was an annual act of remembrance, as well as a chance to clean and decorate family memorials.

Often, families would picnic as well; cemeteries were often the only open green spaces in crowded cities.

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, starting with the American Civil War. It’s believed that the tradition of honoring the dead was inspired by the way Southern states decorated the graves of both Confederate and Union soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and flags.

Several cities and towns across the country lay claim as the first to observe Decoration Day. On May 5, 1866, Waterloo, New York, hosted its own community-wide event that, in 1966, led to President Lyndon Johnson declaring the town as the birthplace of Decoration Day.

Meanwhile, on May 5, 1868, inspired by the suggestion of veteran, Maj. Gen. John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic (a fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans), issued General Order No. 11, designating the 30th of May as an annual day of remembrance. The idea caught on.

President Biden laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and paid tribute to service members and veterans including his late son Beau in his Memorial Day address.

The commander-in-chief was joined by Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin as honored the Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

He laid the flowers, made the sign of a cross and then saluted as the military band played the Star-Spangled Banner for the 155th National Memorial Day Observance.

During his speech he pinpointed Section 60 of Arlington, the final resting place of service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, as a reminder of those who ‘sacrificed everything to keep democracy safe and secure during the last two decades’.

‘Our service members have always embodied the highest expectations of our democracy,’ Biden said in his speech nearly 21 months after he withdrew troops from Afghanistan.

‘Once again stand amid the rows and rows of stones that bear witness to the brave women and men who served and sacrificed for our freedom and for our future, those who died’ Biden said, ‘so that our nation might live’.

‘It’s why we’ve always emerged from every challenge we’ve faced stronger than when we entered it.

‘We’ll never be able to repay the debt we owe them.

‘But today, we rededicate ourselves to the work for which they gave their lives, and we recommit to supporting the loved ones they left behind’.

He honored his son Beau, the day before the eighth anniversary of his death from brain cancer after Iraq.

Beau was a Major in the Army, and Biden has linked his death to exposure to toxic burn pits during his deployment.

‘Tomorrow marks eight years since we lost our son Beau.

‘He didn’t perish in the battlefield was cancer the stole him from us a year after being deployed as a major in the United States Army National Guard and Iraq.’

‘As it is for so many of you, the pain of loss is with us every day but particularly sharp on Memorial Day.

‘Dad, it’s my duty’, he remembered his son saying to him when asked about service.

Biden also paid his respects the families who get a knock on the door to say their loved ones won’t be coming home from the battlefield.

‘Every year we remember, and every year it never gets easier,’ he told the 3,000 members of the audience in his Memorial Day address.

‘Today we once again gather in this sacred place at this solemn hour’.

He touted the bills that help veterans get better access to care, including the PACT Act for service members exposed to toxic burn pits.

At one point he pointed out a young girl who he gave a pen to at the bill signing last year.

Her father, Keith Robinson, is believed to have died from exposure to burn pits.

He finished by saying: ‘We are the only nation in the world built on an idea… that we are all created equal

‘We haven’t always lived up to it but we have never walked away from it… to all those who gave their life for that mission we can say we never will.’
