Happy Valley fans share theories on why Poppy refuses to take her coat off

Happy Valley fans have been sharing their theories about why youngster Poppy refuses to take her coat off in the BBC drama.

The popular show returned to screens earlier this month and has once again seen police hero Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) and notorious villain Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) face-off.

But a subplot has also focused on PE teacher Rob Hepworth (Mark Stanley), who is mentally and physically abusive to his wife Joanna (Mollie Winnard).

Mystery: Happy Valley fans have been sharing their theories about why youngster Poppy refuses to take her coat off in the BBC drama

The couple share two daughters and fans have noticed that their youngest child Poppy (Bonnie Stott) hardly ever removes her coat on the show.

It has been continually referenced and in the latest episode, Rob ordered his daughter to ‘take off the coat’ as she once again walked around the house wearing her padded jacket.

And viewers have taken to Twitter to share their theories about why she always wears a coat, and most of them think it has something to do with her father Rob.

Rob keeps locks all over the house, including on the fridge, and some fans have speculated that Poppy wears a coat because she is cold from malnourishment.

One fan questioned: Why does Poppy always wear her coat? There has to be a significant reason.’

Another speculated: ‘I still wanna know why the young girl won’t take her coat off. Has she got bruises?’

A third added: ‘To add my voice to the debate on why the little girl continually keeps her coat on in #HappyValley, to me it’s linked to the lock on the fridge door.

‘Because her father’s so controlling, that poor little girl’s malnourished, and starving leads to feeling cold all the time.’

While a fourth queried: ‘I wondered if it was because she’s always on high alert and is ready to leave the house?’, and another added: ‘I wondered if she’s always cold because she’s not getting enough to eat.’

‘I’m worried about Poppy Hepworth and her coat. Poor little soul,’ a sixth tweeted.

Another insisted: ‘There’s got to be a bit of a twist coming on that one. They haven’t referenced it this many times for it to not have a bigger part to play later on.’
