Hard Quiz star Tom Gleeson reveals the other top-rating TV game show he was ‘sounded out’ about hosting

Tom Gleeson has revealed he was ‘sounded out’ by a television network about hosting Channel Seven’s 1% Club.

The comedian and quiz show star, 49, who hosts ABC’s Hard Quiz and Hard Quiz Kids, as well as Channel 10’s Taskmaster, said all of his shows were at risk competing against each other.

Speaking to TV Tonight, the stand up comedian gave his reasoning for turning down Seven’s offer.

‘I was sounded out to host The 1% Club but I said no because it was a quiz and that seems silly to me. It’s a great show. But then I’d just be doing two shows that were quite similar,’ he said.

However, Gleeson made a point of differentiating Taskmaster, since it is a game show that features comedians.

‘Taskmaster is up the comedy end of the spectrum with comedians and stuff. It’s not general public contestants, so it’s a very different show,’ he said.

The funnyman also doubted the producers of 1% Club, which is hosted by Jim Jeffries, were genuine.

‘Is that a genuine offer? Not really. I saw the Lee Mack version and thought I could see how this could work. But I think Jim Jefferies is doing great job. He’s a very, very funny act,’ Gleeson remarked.

Despite his reservations about too many game shows, the comedian was recently confirmed to appear as a guest on Channel 10’s Deal or No Deal: Celebrity later this year.

It comes as Tom announced the spin-off series of Hard Quiz that will feature child contestants.

Due to the success of his top-rated trivia series, ABC will be creating a spin-off titled Hard Quiz Kids with Tom at the helm, reported news.com.au earlier this month.

Contestants will be aged 10 to 13, but that won’t stop Tom from delivering his usual hard-hitting quips and gutter humour.

‘I don’t hold back with these kids… but they are all obsessed with roasting these days, so they often gang up on me,’ Tom said of the upcoming show.

‘A lot of the best lines sail over their heads,’ he added, revealing that ‘careful word selection’ has allowed him to keep his usual level of humour kid-friendly.

Hard Quiz Kids is set to premiere on Saturday, June 8 on ABC.
