Harry Garside reveals plans to take home Australia’s first ever boxing gold medal from Paris Olympics – and why he is a ‘sick puppy’

Boxing star Harry Garside has revealed his optimistic hopes for the Australian boxing team at the 2024 Paris Olympics and how many medals he wants them to win.

The 26-year-old Olympic bronze medalist fighter admitted on The Project on Friday he was hopeful the Australian boxing team – who have never won an Olympics gold medal – would take home four this year.

‘We’re going to win multiple, I’m going to be one of them. We are going to win plenty, I’m calling it at four medals,’ he began.

‘I think we have a massive chance and leading into the Brisbane 2032 Olympics, let’s hope we can inspire some people!’

The Melbourne-born pugilist then revealed the one exercise he hated doing during his workout sessions.

‘I’m a bit of a sick puppy, I do love trashing myself in workout sessions. But the bike ergs stationary bikes suck, getting punched in the face is the fun part!’

After winning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Garside has made it no secret that he’s going after Australia’s first Olympic gold medal in boxing, competing in the lightweight division of the sport.

In December, he revealed his theory on The Project about why Australia had never achieved gold despite turning out some incredible boxers.

‘I think the difference between professional boxing and amateur boxing is that they’re almost two different sports right?’ he said.

Professional boxing is a bit longer, and we’ve had many amazing fighters but amateur boxing, the Kazakhs, Uzbeks, the Soviets the Cubans, they’re amazing amateur boxers and they’re really hard to beat over three rounds and I think that’s why Australia hasn’t had much success.’

Despite it never being achieved before, Garside said he had confidence in his team going into the Games.

‘I think we’ve got an amazing team, we’ve got 11 other athletes and I think every one of them is capable of a medal chance,’ he said.
