Maguire suffered the injury against Wolves in the 0-0 FA Cup stalemate and played through the pain barrier, making his hip problem even worse.
It kept him out of Tuesday’s embarrassing 3-1 home defeat by Manchester City at Old Trafford where Pep Guardiola’s side had a field day in attack.
And subsequent scans revealed the extent of the damage which displayed a tear at the top of his hip.
Maguire is now one of the walking wounded and the number of absentees is growing larger for United.

Scott McTominay is not expected to be back until the end of February, Paul Pogba has just undergone surgery on his troublesome ankle and Eric Bailly has only just returned from a long lay-off.
Axel Tuanzebe has been out of action and Marcos Rojo has been linked with a move away in the January transfer window. With Chris Smalling on loan at Roma, United are suddenly looking short of options in the heart of defence.
After the defeat by City, Solskjaer said: ‘We don’t know – it’s not going to be a long, long, long-term one,’ about Maguire’s injury and he will hope the England international can return as swiftly as possible.
